Today began with a lecture on the “first painting” process.  Fernando says the first painting is the first time you are actually painting the form.  We are not to concern ourselves with the detail.  Every time you look at your subject, before you pick up your paintbrush, decide how light and dark the subject is and what kind of tones do you need.  Look for transitions of tone over the subject as it turns away from the light.  Considering the above, we then began painting our individual paintings with thicker brushes to find the shapes, articulate the shadows, and build the form.

Here’s a picture of today’s progress.
